How To Become An Oncologist

An oncologist’s medical training is extensive. They must first of all be accepted into a medical school. After completing GPA and MCAT exams, their scores will be evaluated. If the scores are high enough they may then be accepted into a medical school of their choice. Medical school could take at least 4 to 5 years to complete depending on the degree students have at their point of entry, then they must complete from 1 to 2 years of an internship program in medicine or surgery. After completing the internship, they must also complete 4 years of training in an oncology residency program. Every 10 years an oncologist has to renew their certification in their area of expertise.

Students who are interested in applying to go to medical school must have successfully completed Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, both with Labs, Biology, Physics, Calculus and English. Their GPA scores should be 3.5 or above, although there are schools that may accept a lower score. MCAT scores should be very high to be assured of acceptance. It is also recommended but not absolutely required, that the premed student have some sort of volunteer work or other experience working in a medical setting. A science degree isn’t necessarily required by all medical schools although it is desirable.

Job Outlook

The job outlook is great for oncologists although they may not always find work in the city that they like, and some cities offer a higher oncologist salary than others. There is, however, a high demand for those entering this field despite the recession.
