Real estate agents do not make a traditional based pay. All of a real estate agent salary comes from a percentage of the homes they sell. Listing agents make 5% from a home that they listed once it sells. When a person first enters the field, it can take some time to market themselves to customers. This may require the agent to send out letters to perspective clients to get their name out. All the expenses will need to be paid by the agent, though some top agencies will provide assistance to their agents.
If a person is willing to work long hours the have potential to reach the top of their field. A real estate agent does not have tradition nine to five business hours. They will need to be available in the evenings and weekends when the majority of their clients are available for home showings. Open houses are often held on Sundays because traffic will be higher.
Requirements
Requirements to become a real estate agent vary by state though most states require that an agent is 18 years of age or older. Most states require that an agent take a total number of class hours before taking the licensing test. Where the classes are held vary by the state requirements as well. Some states allow you to take classes at home, others offer them at real estate agencies and some require you take them at accredited colleges. Exam fees can range anywhere from $100 to $150. Once you get your licence, states also require that you continue your education and take the licensing exam every 2-3 years.
Job Outlook
Further advancement in the field is possible by obtaining a broker licence. With a broker licence a real estate agent would be able to own their own agency and have real estate agents work for them. With a broker licence, a real estate salary can be as high as $232,000 according to national averages. Brokers earn a percentage of what each of their agents make, so the potential for earning will depend on how large the agency is.
Even though a real estate agent may work for an agency, they are not required to put in any type
of hours with the agency. Essentially a real estate agent is their own boss. A person who has enough drive to work on their own can succeed in the real estate field.
