Students must take a number of biology, physics and anatomy courses before they graduate. Upon graduation, students will attend another four years at a medical school. Medical schools are located at most of the major state universities. They are often associated with teaching hospitals and enable students a chance to get hands on experience.
An internship follows graduation and may take several years. Hospitalists will then be able to start earning money, and they will see their average first year salary of close to $150,000. This is the entry level hospitalist salary that is given to students who have just left medical school and have received their license to practice medicine in the state. Experienced hospitalists will quickly earn raises and will max out at close to $250,000 per year. These doctors routinely hold advanced jobs in the hospital and may not even see patients after they have been working for many years.
