Requirements
The training requirements to become an FBI agent can be extensive. Legally, FBI agents are required to have a bachelor’s degree and related work experience. It is also possible to enter into the FBI with an advanced degree and at least two years of related work experience. There is a great deal of competition to become a FBI agent and as such it is recommended to have a degree and work experience in order to be considered. In addition, knowledge of a second language is highly recommended. There is an 18 week training course in Quantico, Virginia that is required for all new FBI agents. Being an FBI agent is a physically strenuous job and all agents are required to stay in top physical condition. Periodic tests are given to ensure that agents maintain their physical condition.
Work Environment
FBI agents work a dangerous and highly stressful job. Law enforcement positions can pay a relatively high amount but this is only compensation for the high stress environment. FBI agents are forced to make split second decisions in order to save the lives of others. In addition, criminal organizations can try and extract retribution for damages done to their members. FBI agents and their families may be specifically targeted and attacked by criminal organizations. As agents gain greater security clearances within the U.S. government they will face an increased degree of scrutiny. In the modern era sending sensitive information to another nation’s governments is relatively easy. It is not uncommon for the U.S. government to spy on FBI agents for a period of time in order to ensure that they are not acting as double agents.
FBI agents need to have strong interpersonal skills and analytic skills. One needs to be able to think on the spot and quickly analyze all possible outcomes for a given situation. Due the international nature of modern economy and criminal organizations, it is possible for international travel to be a required part of a FBI agent’s career. A large amount of travel is required for this position. It is common for assignments to require overnight stays. FBI agents are required to work to be able to work any hour.
Job Outlook
There is room for a great amount of improvement within the FBI career. Pay is given according to responsibility and experience. In addition, one is able to earn overtime pay. After years of working as an FBI agent one is able to move into a management position. Internal promotion is very common within the FBI. As one increases in seniority an increased amount of security clearance is required. Working as an FBI is a strenuous but reward job with good pay.
