How To Become An Aircraft Mechanic
To enter this field, high school is required along with a strong affinity for mathematics and science. Generally, an apprentice program or additional training is required before entering the field. There are schools that offer this training. Other ways to pick up this training is through the military or through a paid apprentice program. Since the cutbacks in airline flights, apprentice programs are becoming more difficult to find. They are still available as a civilian employee with the military, but even these are becoming more difficult to find.
Another way is to progress of the employee ladder. Employees can start at a helper level, move up to a worker level, and then onto the mechanic level. Jobs can be found as a civilian employee of the military, with an airline or depot repair level service company. Openings for this job are down in recent years, but knowledge of this profession is easily translated into a mechanic for other fields including car, truck and motorcycle repair.
Most mechanics need what is called an A&P certification. This a test that mechanics must pass, and once certified, the certification needs to be renewed. Those who pass the certification are registered with the state. Civilian employees with the military usually also need to pass this certification, but the military does not always support the upkeep of the certification. This is because the military sets its own mechanic standards.
