How To Become An Audiologist
Becoming an audiologist requires many years of formal education. The beginning step to becoming an audiologist is to obtain a four year college degree in order to gain acceptance into a graduate school. In graduate school, a student wanting to become an audiologist will pursue a degree in audiology. The required degree will vary be state. In most states, a master’s degree is required for a person to become a licensed audiologist, but the requirement of a doctoral degree is becoming more common. A doctoral degree in audiology generally requires four years of study to complete. Both the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association found that audiologists with higher levels of education earned higher salaries than other audiologists. While in graduate school, students preparing to become an audiologist will study anatomy, physiology, genetics and other science and medical subjects in addition to specific coursework related to audiology.
Job Outlook
Though the total number of audiologist positions is comparatively low, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects job openings for audiologists to grow much faster than normal in the immediate future. There are a number of reasons that the demand for audiologists will increase in the future. As hearing loss is a common problem among older people, the aging American population will likely result in an increased demand for the services of an audiologist. Other medical advances will save and extend the lives of those with birth defects and severe illnesses and injuries that may cause hearing loss. The Bureau notes that job opportunities will be best for those audiologists who complete a doctoral program.
