Clinical neuropsychologists work with patients of all ages who have suffered traumatic brain injuries or other cerebral ailments, such as seizures and strokes, as well as victims of learning disabilities. Their area of expertise is in the structure and functioning of the brain and how they affect or cause certain conditions or behaviors. They are usually involved in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders, including the rehabilitation process. One of the largest employers of neuropsychologists is the federal government. Forensic neuropsychology plays a major role in the American court system in helping to explain human behavior and actions.
How To Become a Neuropsychologist
Although neuropsychologists are not medical doctors, their training is similar. Those who practice in the U.S. are required to obtain a four-year undergraduate degree in psychology and then a doctoral degree that will involve four to five years of schooling. The practical portion of their education consists of a one-year internship and two years of residency training, although the latter can be as long as three or four years. As part of their post-doctoral education, neuropsychologists will participate in a number of activities, including research projects, the evaluation and treatment of patients, educational seminars and other course work.
